Am I qualified?
To be qualified for the Air Force ROTC program, you should constantly strive for excellence in all aspects: academics, fitness, and character. Entry qualifications for Detachment 505 are as follows:
- High moral character
- If you have not yet begun college, you must have completed high school and have been accepted into either NMSU or UTEP as a full-time student (minimum of 12 credit hours)
- If you are already in college, you must have a 2.0 GPA or higher
- Minimal or no civil/drug involvements
- Must have at least 3 years remaining in your bachelor’s degree if you are already in college
- Must be between the ages of 17-39 (47 for pre-health professions program)
- Must be a US citizen or planning to become one
What must I do to stay in the program?
While the entry standards are not difficult to achieve, remaining in the program requires more of a commitment:
- Demonstrate excellent character, motivation to lead, and capacity for self-improvement
- Attend and excel in AFROTC coursework (Aerospace Studies classes), weekly leadership labs, and regular physical training
- Maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative and term GPA
- Score at least 15 on the Verbal portion and 10 on the Quantitative portion of the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test
- Achieve an 85 or better on Air Force Physical Fitness Test (if a Freshman) and a 90 or better once you are a Sophomore
- To achieve a maximum fitness test score, you should aim for the following:
- Males (<25 years): 67 pushups in 1 minute, 58 situps in 1 minute, 9:12 on the 1.5 mile run
- Females (<25 years): 47 pushups in 1 minute, 54 situps in 1 minute, 10:23 on the 1.5 mile run
- To achieve a maximum fitness test score, you should aim for the following:
- Be selected for and graduate Field Training, which takes place the summer after Sophomore year
- To be competitive, you should strive to earn at least a 90 on the fitness test, have an overall 3.0 GPA or higher, and show a clear willingness and ability to lead
