Join Our Program

After you've talked with a cadre member and you're ready to join our program, take the following steps:

Step 1: Register for the appropriate NMSU or UTEP Aerospace Studies class (Fall 2023):

  • NMSU: Aero 121
  • UTEP: AS 1231
  • If your expected graduation date is in December 2026 or earlier, please email afdet505@nmsu.edu to schedule a chat with cadre, as you may be required to take an additional class this fall.

Step 2: Create WINGS account to submit your AFROTC application. Follow the step-by-step instructions in the WINGS Application Guide to aid you in creating a WINGS account. Use the following link to access the Holm Center WINGS Portal. You should input all pertinent information, upload all required documents, and answers prior to New Cadet Orientation.

Step 3: Schedule an appointment with your medical provider and take the Air Force Form 28 Sports Physical with you. This document should be filled out and signed by your medical provider prior to attending New Cadet Orientation. This application step is paid for by you!

Step 4: Attend New Cadet Orientation. Though this event is not mandatory, it helps expedite your enrollment and gives new cadets and parents a chance to meet the AFROTC cadre, staff, and other cadets in the detachment. You can ask any questions that haven’t already been addressed and you will be provided with detailed instructions about our requirements and standards of personal conduct. Parents are welcome, but not expected to attend. New cadets should expect to complete any final paperwork required to join our program and should bring the following documents with them:

  • Personal laptop or tablet (if available)
  • Birth Certificate
  • Social Security Card
  • ACT/SAT scores (online printout is acceptable): www.actstudent.org/scores and/or sat.collegeboard.org/scores
  • Any previous college transcripts
  • If you have prior enlisted service, bring a copy of your DD Form 214 or DD Form 4
  • If you attended High School JROTC, bring your certificate of completion
or high school transcript indicating JROTC participation
  • Documentation of any Civil Air Patrol or Eagle Scout awards
  • If you ever received a Department of Defense DODMERB exam, bring the results
(For many of you, this DODMERB exam will be not applicable if you’ve never
applied to a service academy or if you were never in the military)
