AFROTC is a four-year program designed to prepare you for a career as an Air Force officer…

With some effort, many of our cadets are able to complete the program in three years to match their commissioning with their graduation date. The general guidelines for admissions are listed below; however, if you have any questions regarding your eligibility or believe that special circumstances may apply, please contact an Air Force officer at New Mexico State University by phone (575) 646-2136 or email afdet505@nmsu.edu.

Note: Prior enlisted service members (all branches) and former JROTC cadets should contact us to find out about special circumstances and waivers they are eligible for.

General Joining Requirements

For those who are highly interested in joining our program, you must ensure the following are completed if you wish to join AFROTC at NMSU:

  • Gain acceptance into NMSU or UTEP
  • Be a full-time student (12 credit hours or more, this can include the Aerospace Studies class (AFROTC) you must take, which is worth 2 credits)
  • Attend the new cadet orientation (the next one is 19 January at 8am in the business center complex, room 108). The new cadet orientation for the fall semester of 2016 will not be posted until approximately 1 month prior to the fall semester starting
  • For those entering in the fall semester, enroll in Aerospace Studies 121 (AS121). For those entering in the spring semester, enroll in Aerospace Studies 122 (AS122)
  • START NOW to become in the best physical shape you can possible be! You must earn around a 95% on the physical fitness assessment (PFA) in order to continue your AFROTC career past your sophomore year. That means for females, you obtain the following: 13:14 in the 1.5 mile run, 31.5″ waist or smaller, 42 pushups in 1 minute, and 51 situps in one minute. For men, you must obtain the following: 10:37 in the 1.5 mile run, 35″ waist or smaller, 62 pushups in 1 minute, and 55 situps in one minute. Situps are completed with arms crossing the chest, not grabbing on the shirt.
  • For those that have already completed college credits, you must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater to enter the program, and maintain that. It is highly encouraged you aim for a 3.5 GPA to be competitive to continue your AFROTC career past your sophomore year. If you are entering directly out of high school, you must simply be accepted into NMSU

If you meet the above requirements, starting AFROTC is as easy as enrolling in the academic classes listed below. Enrolling in these classes does constitute you serving in the US Air Force. Typically, we only offer contracts to third-year students and those cadets that have earned a scholarship. The contract is the formal obligation that the individual will perform military service upon graduating or leaving the Air Force ROTC program.
